Tips for Keeping Hot Tub Water Clean

Soaking in a hot tub is great for pain relief, relaxation, and hydrotherapy. In order to bathe safely, however, the water must be maintained and purified regularly. Hot tub water is changed every few months, so it’s crucial to ensure the pH levels are safe for bathing. From the experts at Pool and Hot Tub Depot, here are a few tips and tricks to keep your hot tub water clean:

Purchase Test Strips. Water should be tested at least twice a week, with bromine levels between three and five ppm, and chlorine levels between two and three ppm. Regular testing means only small adjustments are required to keep the water at a safe level.

Clean the Filter Regularly. A dirty or clogged filter is often the root cause of unhealthy hot tub water. To avoid murky water, remove and spray off the filter with a hose or filter brush at least once per week. If the filter is extra dirty, consider replacing it with a temporary unit and soaking it overnight. If your filter is black or dark grey, it likely needs replacing.

Invest in a Sanitizer. Choosing a sanitizer that suits your individual needs is key to the health of your hot tub. Choose between chlorine and bromine, but never combine the two. For a low-maintenance solution, consider purchasing a dispenser that releases sanitizer over time.

Add Mineral Sticks. Many hot tub owners prefer keeping chemical usage at a minimum. Natural water purification products, like UV generators, enzymes, and ozone generators, can reduce the level of chemicals needed to keep your water clean.

Avoid Oils and Soaps. The fastest way to pollute your hot tub water is with greasy or oily products like sunscreens, lotions, and hair products. The easiest way to avoid this problem is by taking a shower beforehand. To remove most oils in the water, consider using a Zorbie. It reduces oil levels pumped through the filter and breaks down scum lines that form at the water level.

Empty the Hot Tub. If your water hasn’t been emptied in over three months, and is consistently murky or smelly, your best bet is to dump it out and refill. Ensure the spa is thoroughly cleaned (filter, jets, and seats included) and avoid using products that might clog the system.
