Is a Titanium Hot Tub Heater Element Better?

 

Poor water chemistry can be damaging to heater elements. Corrosion is a process of etching and rusting that occurs in ferrous metals. If the pH of your spa water is below 7.2 or if it is overly chlorinated, chemical corrosion can be accelerated. However, Titanium is a non-ferrous metal that can withstand greater chemical punishment without the pitting, etching, or surface breakdown of typical nickel alloys and even coated elements.

 

Water with high levels of lime, calcium or salt can also corrode elements.

Lime and calcium can collect on the element's surface and form a white-scale coating. This insulating layer will slow down heat transfer, resulting in lower efficiency, longer run periods, and a higher internal temperature. The buildup will also prevent efficient heat escape, and in time, the element will overheat and fail. Water that is high in salt will also corrode typical nickel alloy elements quickly.

 

Titanium is a better choice!

 

Titanium is a better option for heater longevity, and it is the best defence against chemical and mineral corrosion. Even with today's salt sanitizing systems, there is no other material that improves heater longevity like titanium. Titanium naturally produces a dioxide film that continually migrates to the surface and removes harmful content. Moreover, titanium's surface pores do not open when heated, and they do not allow harmful particles to collect. Titanium contains no iron and, therefore, will not rust or corrode. In the harshest water conditions, titanium can resist pitting, oxidizing, and surface breakdown up to 10 times better than typical nickel alloy elements.

 

Titanium is not magnetic and will not attract materials that can promote deterioration. Finally, titanium has a low thermal expansion rate that reduces stress and prevents structural fatigue and fracture. Titanium is your best defence against common hot tub water problems. It is substantially better than traditional nickel alloy elements and still much better than Tefel-coated or other Teflon-coated heater elements.
