Replacing Gecko Spa Pack

Replacing the control system in your hot tub.

Hot tub parts Canada

Many hot tubs are sold, given away or disposed of when the controller quits working. Normally the assumption is that it will cost thousands to replace which is not accurate. Read on and discover what the hot tub controller does and how straight forward it may be to replace or upgrade it in your hot tub. As long as the hot tub shell, structure, plumbing, insulation and surround is in good shape consider updating the controller instead of spending many thousands on a new spa.

The spa control systems function.

Often referred to as the "spa pack", "spa controller" or "spa control system" the spa controller is essentially the heart of any hot tub operation system. Hot tubs that are 20 years old or older may have what referred to as a mechanical controller, which did not contain a circuit board or any electronics. All of the newer hot tubs have electronic control systems for safety and efficiency. The spa controller is equipped with a heater, controls for the pump that powers the jets and a thermostat for the system to keep the hot tub water at the temperature you choose.

The easiest way to identify whether your hot tub has a mechanical spa pack or a digital spa pack is by looking at your hot tubs topside controller or keypad, if you only see buttons and a rotary dial then your hot tub has a mechanical spa pack. If you see a topside with a digital screen that shows the water temperature then your hot tub has a digital spa pack.

Selecting a replacement spa controller.

When selecting a replacement control system for your hot tub you'll want to select a bundle that can meet the equipment needs of your hot tub. It's best to take stock of what equipment is in your hot tub like how many jets, pumps, does your hot tub have a dedicated circulation pump, an ozonator or a blower? It's also important to note what size the GFCI breaker is currently installed to service your hot tub and if the wire to the hot tub is a 4 wire which includes a neutral/common wire. A number of older systems did not require a neutral wire and therefore it was not installed when the hot tub was originally wired. All current generation systems require the neutral wire.

Gecko offers a number of factory assembled bundles which include the controller (spa pack), keypad, cords for the pumps and accessories. Selecting a correct bundle from Gecko is the most economical way to update your hot tubs control system with the current generation digital system. The Gecko Spa Pack bundles range from the small JY system for a small 1 pump hot tub all the way up to the YT series which can control up to 5 pumps and more accessories.

IN.TOUCH 2 is the easiest way to control and configure your hot tub, it allows you to configure all the spa settings from filtering times to heating, temperature and also if your select to set the filter cycle for off peak time times.

Installing the Gecko Spa controller.

Once you've selected the Gecko Ye-5 bundle for your spa, the next step ins the installation which would typically be done by a qualified technician or electrician. If your old hot tub controller had a 15" long heater tube then the new Gecko spa pack will just drop right in and the plumbing unions should thread right onto the new heater. For the rest there are step by step instructions included with every Gecko spa pack from the factory. Once installed and your electrician has wired up the spa turn the breaker on and follow the set up instructions to let the spa controller know what your hot tubs pump set up is so it can control the pumps properly. Now your hot tub should be running and heating, depending on the size of the hot tub it should take about 6 - 9 hours to heat up if your hot tub is wired on 230 volts.

CAUTION
Electrical wiring and repairs can be dangerous, especially around water. There is a risk of shock or electrocution, which could result in serious injury or death. It is strongly advised that hot tub electrical wiring be referred to a licensed electrician. The qualified installer should read and follow the instructions that are provided by the manufacturer of the spa controller and associated electrical component owner's manuals and instructions. Regardless of who performs the work, be sure that power to the hot tub is turned OFF at the house service panel prior to inspections, wiring, or repairs. Improper wiring may damage equipment and void the manufacturer's warranty.
